Tuesday Treasures - Thrifted Gifts - December 30, 2025

Now that Christmas has come and gone, here are some of the items I thrifted to give as gifts, and some I got as gifts.  I know my audience, and they don't mind thrifted items, and they know I don't either!  You can find some nice gifts to give in thrift stores, or online sites.

This little glass bluebird from St. Vincent de Paul was tagged as Fenton, but I don't think it is.

A bird house or feeder boot from Goodwill.

This beautiful twisted Murano style rainbow ribbon sculpture came from a yard sale.

1950s bird perch on pinecones planter. The back part, the planter part, is a nest.  It's a Japanese import of the sort that was sold in stores such as Woolworths.

A new cat toy from the Goodwill Bins.  Baby Cat isn't big on toys, not like Benny was.

A few of Mickey's gifts were thrifted.  The red grinning dog has the red and green checkered body.  Each check has its own squeaker.  That's from the Bins.  The nylabone type (I don't think it's a brand name Nylabone) is from Goodwill, but new.  He already mangled the new Highland cow! The Pizza Mutt "box" holds three slices of "pizza."  He got that from a relative.

Two vintage German Schwarzer Peter card games, one more vintage than the other!  Schwarzer Peter, or Black Peter, is played like Old Maid, no one wants to be left holding Peter.  St. Vincent de Paul

A shark planter from the Goodwill Bins for a shark-lover!  I did get a small succulent from Trader Joe's to plant in its mouth.  Trader Joe's because I didn't want to have to go to Walmart (where they might not have any this time of year) or a nursery, and I know Trader Joe's carries small succulents.  They had only two the day I went, but it was Christmas time so most of the plants were holiday themed.

A vintage 1970s tin rolling cat.  It pains me to say something as "new" as the 1970s is vintage, but there you have it.   Originally there was warning sticker on the bottom letting buyers know that it wasn't meant to be a toy.  This one is from St. Vincent de Paul, and works just fine.  Not as a toy...

I got some nice thrifted gifts too!

Of course, there's the painting my son bought for me in September!  I had to remind him that, no, he didn't need to get me anything, he already had!

Some lovely stamps, foreign, from the US, and a few Cinderellas as well.  One Cinderella is on the bottom right, "We Saw His Star," from the American Bible Society.  A Cinderella stamp resembles a postage stamp, but not used for postage.  They got their name as stamp collectors once deemed them inferior, as Cinderella was inferior to her family.  Some collectors specialize in Cinderellas.

Postcards are always a welcome thrifted gift!

As are vintage ceramic dogs. These were made in Japan.

You many not know I collect coins as well as postcards and stamps.  I didn't realize the gift-giver knew!  These two are Third Reich, the top a 1939 5 Reichspfennig of zinc.  The bottom is a
1 Reichspfennig from 1940.  Not thrifted, but definitely secondhand (which doesn't literally mean only one previous owner).

Postcards, stamps, and coins all offer opportunities to learn more about history.  And, as they are small, they don't take up a lot of room.  Unless you go overboard, which I haven't yet!

Don't hesitate to browse your thrift stores next time you need a gift.  You might even spot something you want as a gift!
