Postcards Again!  I'm not sure if I mentioned how agreeable the manager at St. Vincent de Paul was on the "big haul" postcard purchase days.  Maybe it's because she was retiring in June!  One day she brought out boxes of antique postcards for me to look through, and told the volunteer cashiers to give me 25% off all my postcards that day!   Here's what I got (the dogs from the same day are under all the ephemera.)  There are the holy/prayer cards from a previous post.  The WWII ship photos will be featured on an upcoming Tuesday.  The only individual postcards shared today are two which come last, a case of "Last, but not least."  I got a lot of postcard books.  Amboise, France with tissue between each image. Amboise is on the Loire River. Chicago to La Junta Overland Set No 1 depicts scenes along the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway, and were produced exclusively for them. I got several postcard books of Pike's Peak from t...

Motley Monday (but really just Daylilies) - June 29, 2026

Image
I hope you're ready for some daylily photos!   Left are some mysteries. The top right is Ned's Choice , a spider from, and bottom right is a new bloomer, My Reggae Tiger .  Or, it supposed to be My Reggae Tiger , but it's a spider and has more yellow.  It came in a three pack called Once in a Lifetime and it is the only one, so far, to bloom.   A nicer photo of the maybe My Reggae Tiger . One of my oldest, Scottish Fantasy , planted in 2020.  Top left: Insider Trading , right Moon Over Monterey Bottom left: Longfield's Pink , right Hyperion An unnamed (or unknown name) spider.  What makes daylilies spider forms?  The petals are four times, or more, the length of their width.  They often curl inward, like spider legs.  Heavenly Angel Ice is a spider as well.  Grape Magi c is one of my favorites, which came in a four pack from Walmart in 2020 for only $4!   Double Classic Top left: unknown, right is Bonanza ...

Thursday Postcard Hunt - Shapes: Irregular/Wavy

Image
Thursday Postcard Hunt 's Shapes theme ends this week with Irregular/Wavy postcards. Sand Dunes near Pismo Beach, CA From the Lake No. 1 by Georgia O'Keeffe, 1924 K9 Kitty , 2001.  According to the reverse of the postcard, this shows " vegetable dye on Mindy, Siamese snowshoe cross ."  However, further research has shown it is digitally altered, no cats were dyed or painted at all.  What a disappointment! One of the postcards in  Why Cats Paint  which unfortunately my thrift store took apart to sell individually.  I have told them more than once I'd pay several dollars for an intact postcard book, more than the 5¢ each price they get taking the books apart.   Mindy's "paint" job is said to have frightened the neighbor's fox terrier into leaving her alone!  I wonder if Mindy even had a fox terrier neighbor?  July brings the new theme of Architecture, with Churches being first next week.

Some more dogs from St. Vincent de Paul! The two on the right top are tiny, they are "doll house" dogs, Japanese.  The long terrier was also made in Japan, as is the poodle pair.  The blue and white's background is harder.  Unmarked, white clay body, with the blue decorations, was common in Dutch, Danish, and German miniatures in the 1950s through the 1970s.  They were all a dollar or two, less if they were bagged with a companion dog.  For 50¢ a bag I got a lot of holy or prayer cards.  I keep the vintage for their artwork.  Here are a few of my favorites. Saint Anne,  Pray for us! is an antique, dating back to 1890-1910. I don't know anything about the Infant Jesus of Prague, but here he is on four different cards. They put out a lot more ephemera, bit by bit, over a few weeks.  I managed to be there to pick up some of the nice stuff!   So stay tuned...

Thursday Postcard Hunt - Shapes: Lines

Image
This week Thursday Postcard Hunt 's Shape is Lines.  The Hawaiian flag has lines.  Yes, that's the British Union Jack, and here's why .  The logo for the 10th Pan American games held in Indianapolis, IN in 1987 has lines.  Staying within the lines at the IU Track and Field Stadium, Indianapolis, IN (now called Carroll Stadium) at the 1987 Pan American games track and field events. Traditional houses in Marken, North Holland, the Netherlands have lots of decorative lines. Next week, the last in June, will bring us Irregular/Wavy Shapes.
