Growing it anywhere can be a problem. English ivy is bad too. In fact, English ivy is illegal in OR to plant, sell, or transport into state, but Boston is illegal to plant, sell, transport, OR propagate! English is the kind choking out the forests in Portland hills. I'm not sure why it's left on this building, one belonging to PSU.
The ivy made for an interesting B&W picture but, as other commenters pointed out, it's not a good thing to have. There is a building on the edge of downtown where I used to work in an office that has almost been taken over by ivy.
