Sunday Stamps - May 31, 2026
Sunday Stamps brings us the letter R this week.
Nothing unusual about these first two R animals. I just think they are particularly pretty stamps.
Rooster designed and engraved by Albert Decaris. The Gallic rooster is a long-standing symbol of France, representing pride, vigilance, national identity, and the dawn of a new day. From the mid-1960s onwards the stamps were printed with phosphorescent bars for automatic sorting, and these show up under UV light.

Raccoon Dog, of which there were seven species, but only two now exist, including this, the Japanese Raccoon Dog.

I also found a raccoon dog, but I am not sure it it has something to do with raccoons...

ReplyDeleteI loved the rooster (of course). The raccoon dog is new to me, and I read they are strictly prohibited from entering the United States as they could become an invasive problem very quickly.
ReplyDeleteI was confused by the colours on the rufous crowned roller ... but it seems it is also a purple roller!

I did not know the rooster was so entwined with France.
