Nativity
Ireland 1976 Christmas
Based on the painting by Lorenzo Monaco, The Nativity, but actually quite different.  The original is shown below the stamp image.  There the animals are gazing adoringly at the baby rather than eating from the manger, as on the stamp.  I wonder why the baby is on the ground rather than in the manger, as is tradition?  Or, is he floating?  If that's Joseph on the right he looks like he dislocated his neck (in the painting).

If we continue as expected, which we will, next week will feature O stamps.

  3. In general, I like Christmas stamps. But they could have done a better job on this one and, at least, not put the baby on the ground :D

  4. I wonder why they did not use Monaco's original painting if its in public domain, the stamp is a poor copy/imitation and we loose the fearful shepherds and angel. Those solid gothic halos always produce problems (poor Joseph), thank goodness Giotto broke with tradition creating the three dimensional halo of the Renaissance.

  5. I wonder if there was any outcry in Ireland at the time over that very odd stamp depiction? I like the nuclear stamp (I remember spending hours doodling that atomic energy symbol). The Navajo art textiles are instantly recognizable.
