Day 4: Tuesday Treasures - November 4, 2025

My son and I went thrifting a few weeks ago.  I was going to skip it, I'd been the day before and found nothing, but I'm glad my son wanted to go.

First we went to a nearby Goodwill where I found this gem.

Nearly 20 lbs. of collie!  It's made by Solid Rock Stone Works in Athens, Georgia.  They market it as a "Lassie" garden statue or pet memorial.  They charge $85 (more on Etsy), and I got it for $6.11!

Then a stop at St. Vincent de Paul.  I'd bought a bunch of 5¢ postcards the week before, and learned a man had bought all of the vintage ones that morning.  No problem, I'd pawed through them more than once.  But, now I'm worried he'll get to any more that are put out!  So, I go in more often than usual just to see if there are any.

I found these two pastels, framed in Texas, c1940s-1950s (based on back of frames, and the framer's sticker phone number, four digits long!).  One is signed Verda Patalien, a name I find no information on. I will say the other is by her too, same frames, similar subject, however the first one just seems a bit better in quality, and a much smoother finish to the pastels.  The photos are slanted in an attempt to keep the glass glare to a minimum.

I like the first one best, and almost bought just it.  But, I love the blue glass in the second, and it's the one signed.  Plus I don't like breaking up an artist's works.  I don't like the vaguely southwestern style pottery.
