Day 10: Motley Monday -November 10, 2025

Another Monday post of random photos I've saved.

The wild grapes (Vitis californica) on the fence are changing color, as are the trees in the background on a foggy weekend morning.

This is dragline silk. It is used for safety lines and web construction. It is the strongest type of spider silk, which they can suspend themselves from and escape predators.  Spiders, depending on species, can produce up to seven different kinds of silk.

There was a raven convention near the gas station the other morning.

Speaking of birds... the photo doesn't really show how different these hen egg yolks were.  Both grocery store eggs, different brands, neither organic.   The difference has nothing to due with freshness, it's is due to the hens' feed.  Foods rich in carotenoids like alfalfa, corn, leafy greens, produce deeper orange yolks.  Feed lacking colorful plant matter, like grain based ones,  lead to paler yolks.  While the darker yolk suggest the hens had a better diet, they may just be fed food with dyes.  There isn't much difference between the two as far as nutrition.  Omega-3 enriched eggs are from hens whose feed has added omega-3 fatty acids, commonly from flaxseed, algae, or fish oil, which can benefit us, especially if we don't eat them ourselves (me, that's me, I don't like fish, I don't like flaxseed, and I don't think I'd like algae).  Enough about eggs!  (I was making banana nut bread.)

Strawberry and banana dog biscuits?   I was willing to give them a try (no, not for me, for Mickey!) since they were at the Dollar Tree for $1.25.  Surprisingly, Mickey likes them!   You think this is where the Dole fruit goes when it's not quite perfect for human use?

An unknown sort of Parasol mushroom in the backyard.

Also in the backyard, evidence I have neglected the daylilies!  Although now gathering up the dead leaves will be easy.

I was supposed to pick up someone at the airport yesterday, but he got caught up in the airport cutbacks and his flight was cancelled.  Hopefully night's flight, with a different airline, different layover city, will make it.

Comments

  1. I am not fond of spiders or their webs, but now that I know about this, I can at least greatly admire their ability to produce this dragline silk!
