They sting, but I've never been stung by one. I just leave them alone to build their paper nests. Unless the nests are on an eave or gate, then I wait until they're gone and knock the next down! Same with the mud dauber wasps.
They like to mind their own business if we do. They are too busy pollinating in my garden or building paper nests to bother about me when I take their photos.
...if it stings, I'm not a fan!
