Sunday Stamps - August 31, 2025

Sunday Stamps has E for the theme this week.  E lephant Burkina Faso c1963 E arth USA 1988 The E -Rate stamp was issued to correspond to the new First-Class postage rate known as the E -Rate.  The E arth on the E -Rate was a conscious decision made to improve the formerly "drab" look of non-denominated stamps. E viction Scene  Ireland (or E ire) 1981 Commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Land Law Act,  which gave, in part, tenant farmers more long-term security, lower rents, and rights to sell their tenancy to others.  This was known as the " Three Fs. "  Fair rent, fixity of tenure, and free sale.  So long as their rent was paid, they couldn't arbitrarily be evicted, as shown on the stamp. The "Three Fs" above reminds me that next week our theme will be F !

Thursday Postcard Hunt - Illustrations: Food or Plants

Image
Food or Plants is this week's Illustrated theme for Thursday Postcards .   A reproduction of a fruit crate label.  Great garage sale find (a set of five), as I collect crate labels!   A postcard my son brought me from Georgia, USA. Savannah pecan pie recipes are usually different from this one.  This is pretty much just a common southern pecan pie recipe.  No problem with that, I love it, in small doses, pecan pie is super sweet! Tony Packo's Cafe , Toledo, Ohio Famous for the Tony Packo Hot Dog since 1932.  It's also the world capital of autographed hotdog buns.  Really !  Burt Reynolds started the tradition of celebrity bun signing. The buns are now made of foam.  There is also an exhibit of MASH, the television show, memorabilia. Tony Packo's was mentioned six times in the series.  And what a great series that was!  Hilariously funny, and heartbreakingly sad both. The postcard looks a little bit like a photo, but ...

Turkey Gobblers

Image
... or as my late cat Benny would say, " Turkey Cobblers ."   These are juvenile wild turkeys, about 4-5 months old.  At this age they are called jakes and jennies.   At this age they flock together for safety and learning how to be turkeys.  This flock is likely made up of jennies, perhaps a few jakes, but the directional flocking is jenny behavior.  The Sidewalk Strutters  They were headed to the lawn on the other side of the wall.  They eat seeds, nuts, berries, insects, and, here, the new growth of a mowed lawn!  Geese are crazy for that too, which is why you, or at least I, see flocks of geese on the newly mown park lawn.   This street dead-ends, and I've seen this young flock from the other side of the houses on a busier street where there was no way to stop to photograph them.  As the crow flies they are just down the street from my house.  Not as the turkey flies, not yet, they are capable of short fast ...

I had books in my hold list at the library, but they weren't in yet.  I needed something to read!  So, off to the Goodwill Bins where books are 25¢ each.  Some days no books, but this time there were lots.  I did have to dig for them though, no bin dedicated to just books.     In the general salvage bins I rescued two pieces of art.  Three, but one was a true rescue to donate to St. Vincent de Paul and not something I'm keeping.  As the two I kept were not framed, they were light, and at $1.89 per pound, cost was minimal. One, this Gond (they refer to themselves as  Kōītōr )   painting from central India.  The Gond tribal community is known for these vibrant paintings with dots and dashes reminiscent of Australian indigenous art.  This one is two lions (note the tuft on the end of the tail, tigers don't have tufted tails) and is dated 2011.  15" x 11"  Just floating around in the bins, fortunately only getting o...

Another batch of random garden and other stuff photos.   Common Checkered Skipper Skippers are classified as butterflies yet share some features with moths.  Not a bee, this is a Common Hoverfly. Not native to North America, but now they live everywhere but Antarctica. This one is on garlic chive flowers. Wild Grapes ( Vitis californica ) will be turning color soon.  They are too seedy to do much with, and I've yet to see any backyard wildlife eat any.   A Red Tomato on a Green Chair  My son did a couple of hours worth of weed-eating this weekend.  This is a partial done area of the Toss Garden. Under that mess of wild grapes is the strawberry bed.  The rest of the mess is made up of end-of-summer knautia, several kinds of mint, black-eyed Susans... lot of things that will be back.   Speaking of black-eyed Susans... this little one survived the weed-eating!  A single  perfect  New Dawn climbing rose blossom.  I t...
