Tuesday Treasures - February 17, 2026

St. Vincent de Paul had some small boxes of ephemera a few weeks ago.  I love looking through those!   I found quite a few postal cards. Postal cards are government issue postcards with a printed stamp.  The first official postal card was issued by the Austro-Hungarian Empire on Oct. 1, 1869.  A year later Germany issued their first. Germany then quickly became known for publishing postcards, especially in the Golden Age  of postcard production, 1890s-1914.  A few months later the UK joined in, followed by many other countries.  The U.S. was late to the game, the first postal card being published in 1873. Region: Bavaria, Germany Freistaat Bayern (Free State of Bavaria) postal card issued c. 1919, shortly after Bavaria declared itself a Free State within the Weimar Republic.  It is overprinted after the fall of the Bavarian Socialist Republic.   Saargebiet (Saar Basin) The Saar Basin was administrated by the League of Nations ...

Thursday Postcard Hunt - Light - Lights in Windows

Image
Lights in Windows is this week's Thursday Postcard Hunt theme.  State Capitol Buildings by night were popular postcard images. Georgia c.1930s - 1940s Indiana c.1930s - 1940s North Carolina c.1930-1935 Lights were always shining at the 24 hour Safeway in Jantzen Beach, on Hayden Island, Portland, Oregon... until 2018 when it closed.  Hayden Island is a popular shopping spot for Vancouver, Washington residents, as it's just across the I-5 bridge, and being in Oregon there is no sales tax! I was going to stop there, but got this Postcrossing one a few days ago from Ann Marie, and it fit the theme too perfectly not to include it.  The Light theme next week is Light or Bright Colors.

Skywatch Friday - August 15, 2025

Image
Skywatch Friday  A few years ago I went to Salem, OR to accompany someone taking a professional state license exam (Salem being the state capital).  While there we visited the OHS Museum of Mental Health.  Opened first as an "asylum" in 1883, it was still a hospital when used as a filming location for  One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.  It certainly seems highly inappropriate now that employees, including the superintendent, were cast in the film, and even more so that patients were involved, behind the scenes, as well as on-screen.  There is no public record of their consent, if they were even able to give it.  Of course, there is a new hospital now, on the same grounds.   While it's not a happy place to visit, I do recommend it if you are ever in Salem.  It was eye-opening to see exhibits and read about the patients and "treatments."  So many women were keep against their wills due to their husbands claiming they were acting "crazy...
